Programs Offered at
Brookeside Montessori
Preschool
Dr. Montessori observed that children are comfortable and secure in prepared environments in which every object has its
place and activities are performed in an orderly fashion. In our classroom, each child may choose an activity and pursue it, working alone or
with others in a mixed age group, allowing children to learn from and help each other without competitive pressure.
The materials in the classroom are designed to be experienced on a multi-sensorial level and with a minimum of adult instruction. Montessori
sensorial materials isolate specific concepts such as size or shape and invite children to develop these concepts on a concrete basis.
Practical life activities such as buttoning, pouring and washing enable the young child to acquire a wide range of skills
necessary in building the child's self-confidence and self-image as a successful and capable person.
Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten
The Pre-Kindergarten and
Kindergarten programs continue to develop the child's positive self-image, develop
concentration and persistence skills, and foster cooperation and respect for
others and the environment while engaging the child in the basics of academic
skills. The activities in the classroom are child directed,
non-competitive, and self-correcting. Each session has a beginning,
middle, and end, and helps to develop the child's sense of order and improve
the child's attention span.
Children are taught to respect and accept other
children in the classroom. When you visit the classroom, you will notice the
many multi-sensorial items that challenge each child within the room.
These items have specific locations and when a child finishes an
activity, he or she returns the item to its appropriate place.
Brookeside began offering a full-day Kindergarten program in 2003. It is a modified Montessori approach to
Kindergarten. Children use Montessori materials along with phonics and
thematic based materials to strengthen academics in a non-competitive
and nurturing environment.
Because of the full-day program, children have more
time to concentrate on their work with fewer transitions.
The morning schedule features reading, handwriting, and math
through individual guided discovery, paired work, and whole
group circle time. Most specials
(art, music, Spanish and computers) are also conducted during the
morning hours. An hour is allotted for lunch and recess. The
afternoon is filled with science and social studies enrichment. The goal for Kindergarten students is to achieve personal and academic
growth while continuing to cultivate a love of learning.
Elementary
Continuing on the solid
principles and learning techniques established in Pre-School, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten,
the Elementary classroom utilizes more advanced multi-sensorial
materials and academic materials. The Elementary classroom is an exciting
environment, composed of an open, multi-year age span grouping
that permits the child to be an active rather than passive learner.
The classroom is a warm, open environment that fosters cultural
diversity.
Children choose the learning activity that suits
their needs at that particular time. This occurs within the structure of
teacher prepared learning activities that stimulate and progressively
challenge each student according to his or her learning abilities.
Creative writing, grammar, math, history, geography, computers,
and sciences are part of the
challenging curriculum.
